Our Survey

Most people don't do anything to prepare for disasters. How do I know? Go to a store the day before a storm and look around. Milk and bread...gone. Snow shovels...gone. We also conducted a survey on this topic to see how prepared people are for disasters and emergencies.

We performed an internet survey in February 2021, asking people in the PA, DE, NJ area about their preparation for disasters. Of course, responses would likely change based on the region of the country and risks (such as wildfires or tornados, rather than a blizzard). Here's what we got.

Question 1: "Which would be most likely to affect your home?"

Answers: #1-Power Outage; #2-Blizzard; #3-Flooding

Great, so let's see if people prepare for these issues. On to question 2...

Question 2: "Do you have any of the following in your home?"
Answers:  62.5% of the 80 respondents have NO disaster supply kit

It appears that only about 39% of the survey respondents have some sort of disaster supply kit at home. So, what do they have at home?

Question 3: "You're stuck at home and all of your utilities are out. What do you have at home right now?"
Answers:

Great, so most people have food, a flashlight, and some basic tools. BUT, how would many others get water, stop a leak, stay warm, or charge their phone?

Question 4: "Do you have a well or sump pump?"
Answer:

Here's a big area for improvement. How would you get water if you were stuck in your home? What happens if your basement starts to flood and the electricity is out?

With this data, and data from other studies, we created a Disaster Kit and included some educational resources below. Our goal is to help you and your family prepare for emergencies and disasters BEFORE they happen.
